Quick Guide to exploring Roma

by Tomi AjayiSeptember 7, 2014
Roma – the ancient city, unashamed of its past and culture. If you’re looking for a glimpse of Europe, and like food and architecture, look no further.
Here’s my short guide, be sure to share your thoughts, and any tips you know or have heard of.

Getting There and About

Getting to Roma requires a Schengen visa if you will be visiting other places, otherwise you could get just the Italian tourist visa. The biggest cost is the airfare, so if you can travel light (no checked baggage), then you’re halfway there already. You can also look up hostels if you want to keep costs down.

If you go the hostel route, you’ll be sharing a room with other people but hey, you’re not there to spend time indoors but to explore. Plus, room mates aren’t such a bad thing seeing as you can get tips and suggestions from them.

One thing to note is that unless you are extremely averse to walking, you would not need public transport to move about, except to and from the airport. Get a street map as soon as you can and you’re good to go.

Rome is an amazing little gem that has surprises on every corner.

There are restaurants on every corner but for me, the primary delight is the gelato.

Freshly made every morning, you can taste the flavor of the ice cream though and through, no artificial flavors here. Sadly they won’t fill your stomach and at some point, you will have to eat. For aspiring chefs, most hostels have a kitchen so you can buy local ingredients to create whatever your mind can dream up.

If cooking isn’t your thing, you can ask your roommates or the hostel receptionist for some spots with authentic Italian cuisine and go for a long Italian meal

Tourist Spots

Be sure to visit the Colosseum and the Vatican, book tickets in advance if you can, to beat the queues. If you can afford to, splurge on a tour guide so you get a detailed description of all you see.

Make sure you visit at least one of the several fountains, and be sure to throw in a coin or two.

Get a city map, wander the streets, get lost, and ask directions from people.

Wander, wander, wander, you’ll be sure to find surprises on every corner.

Fall in love with the architecture; the marriage of old and new.

You’re allowed to buy an item or two, but remember the only excess weight you’re allowed to have is on your body. Enjoy !!!
